the log and its axe / the page and its price

This pictorial essay, based on a bit of marginalia in a letter written by Rene Magritte, references his paintings featuring towering tree characters. Inspired by this sketch, these sepia miniatures propose a modest reminder of how one is apt to unknowingly cling to, and even protect, the weapons of our own demise. There are are times when the simple transformation of fundamental elements arrests suffering and converts it into the roots of poetry.
