The Log and its Axe / The Page and its Price

Fourteen pages with wood veneer frontispiece, 6×4″, 2017.
Printed on archival rag paper. Limited edition.

This pictorial essay was sparked by a bit of visual marginalia I saw in a letter written by Rene Magritte. His paintings of odd tree-characters propose, as is usual in his wonderful work, a renovated scale and perspective. The juxtaposition of related elements, like a log and a page, open an expansive imaginative process that happily mixes metaphor and meaning. Simultaneously, even as we explore these inventive capacities, Magritte’s axe calls attention to some embedded habit to cling tight to the very themes that cut us most deeply.
